Magic of Water

In Balkan, people believe that water is life being, and that have it conciseness. In almost all rites people invoke and hail the water.  When you bring water in to the house, put it on the floor so she can “rest”. Legend say that all water gather in the end of the world, in the place where sky sleep on earth.

Types of magical water:
Live water: is water in nature who by herself have source and go, move, like river and there is Dead water: she stay in one place, and do not move, like pond…
Stopping water: water in the morning on the flowers and herbs, she stay in place after dew. This water can be use in healing and purification rituals.
Oblivion water: it is natural frozen water, and this gives her occult powers. When people drink of this water, they drink to forget something.
Untouched water: first water in the morning (after midnight) that we broth home have magical powers and it is used in all rituals of Balkan magic. Tradition says that young maiden need to go before sunrise to natural source to bring this magical water home. All the way home she cannot talk to anyone, and she cannot look back till she got home.
Wind water: water from watermill – it is wary rear now, and it is used for love magic or for child healing.
Miraculous water: this we can find of special holy sources where for centauries people come for heal or do magic. These sources are marked in Balkan by some religious mark, and in the same time are wary healing and it is used in medicine. It is so powerful that people believe it can do all magic and vanquish all demons.
Evil water: it is natural turbid water, or water where somebody drown, or water that is used to bath dead man. This water is full of evil demons and it is used for worst evil spells, curses or evil eye.

Pumpkin is often used as vessel to bring water from it natural source. As part of magical practice, and usage of magical water, before any use, first a little water is spilled on the ground as sacrifice for dead and ancestors.

Fairy water: this is the water where fairies are taking bath. This water is wary powerful and sacred. There is many way how to get is. One of believe is to go at the source of healing water and to take water with pumpkin vessel from the place that reflect the full moon light in midnight. Doing that you need to ask fairies for this power and to live something as gift, something shiny, like crystal or gemstone. Other way is to find source in Fairy land or sacred to Fairies. This source is some ware in untouched nature, clear and natural.

Week after Beltaine is sacred, so people go out in nature to collect this holy water. To preserve water from spoilage, people put a little alcohol drink in vessel of water and a part of silver, and keep water on some cold and dark place.

Water is wary important in magic and spirituality in Balkan. Reason for that is ancient cult of Cybele, great mother, who latter in the time of Christianity became Virgin Mary, Mother of God. In ancient time, Thracian tribes worship Cybele by the name of Kotys, and her priesthood was called baptes or “washers” because there pre-worship purification involved bathing, and water was main tool in these rituals of this priests. This ritual is probably pre-baptizing ritual.

Nebom te i zemljom kumim
U morske shirine
U visoke visine
U duboke dubine
Gde pevac ne peva
Gde krava ne rice
Gde ovca ne bleji
Gde koza ne veci
Gde pas ne laje
Gde dete ne place
Hajd u kam, u goru, u vodu, tu ti mesto nije!...”

English:
“Come on you sad, sad thing,
I’m begging you with sky and earth
In sea coast
In sky above
In deep deepness
Where roster do not sing
Where caw do not roars

Where goat does not bleats
Where dog does not bark
Where child does not cry
Go away to worse, to water, this is not the place for you!...”
